Sinopse

Maggie: A Girl of the Streets is an 1893 novella by American author Stephen Crane (1871–1900). The story centers on Maggie, a young girl who is driven to unfortunate circumstances by poverty and solitude and who struggles to survive the brutal environment of the Bowery, a New York City slum, at the end of the nineteenth century.

The work was considered risqué by publishers because of its literary realism and strong themes.

Crane's unflinching depiction of the devastating environmental forces that ultimately destroy this young woman was celebrated as one of the most important works of American Naturalism.

Nasceu a 1 de novembro de 1871, em Newark, New Jersey. Após frequentar o Claverack College – Hudson River Institute, Crane ingressou no Lafayette College, em 1890 e, no fim do primeiro semestre, já acumulara «deficiências académicas» suficientes para garantir a sua saída. Pouco depois, ingressou na Universidade de Syracuse. Mas também aqui a sua estada não se prolongou, já que passava a maior parte do tempo a jogar baseball. Apesar de ter conseguido a nota máxima em Literatura Inglesa, reprovou a tudo o resto. O interesse de Crane pela guerra deu origem a uma obra-prima. Em 1895, é publicado The Red Badge of Courage, um grande êxito, tanto nos Estados Unidos como em Inglaterra, e que o torna internacionalmente célebre. A sua morte prematura, aos 28 anos, parece ter posto fim a uma vida inteira.
