UMBERTO ECO (1932-2016), nasceu em Alessandria, perto de Turim. Pressionado pelo pai, entrou para Direito na Universidade de Turim, mas depois mudou de curso para Filosofia e Literatura Medieval. Doutorou-se em Filosofia em 1954. Tornou-se depois jornalista e escreveu o seu primeiro livro em 1956: Il problema estetico in San Tommaso. Desde então escreveu diversos livros, de ensaio e de ficção, que o consagraram como um dos maiores escritores e estudiosos do nosso tempo.
