Tom Percival teve uma infância não convencional numa parte remota de South Shropshire. A família teve de sair de casa e viveu numa caravana durante seis anos. Tudo parecia MUITO real à noite, numa caravana cheia de correntes de ar, sem televisão nem eletricidade, onde a luz provinha de candeeiros a petróleo pendurados nas paredes, que se acendiam com um fósforo. Bebiam a água que iam buscar a uma fonte, e, no meio do frio do inverno, o gelo formava-se na cabeceira da cama. Foram anos de formação, na vida, e, através dos livros e do desenho, encontrou a sua inspiração e o conforto para sonhar. Talvez tenha sido por isso que começou a escrever as suas próprias histórias - histórias onde as crianças que não têm a mesma sorte ou as mesmas oportunidades que outras são ignoradas e rejeitadas pela sociedade, e esta foi a forma que o autor encontrou de lhes dizer: «Sim, tu pertences aqui.»
